Thrush...What is it.
As I clean out the foot I say to you, your horse has thrush. I have found it most likely in the areas of the frog (Comissure and sulci). An (anaerobic bacteria) deep black, smelly past/liquid hidden in the foot. First OES does not believe that thrush is only in horses that are kept in dirty stalls and pastures, however this does not help to combat it. The horse's hoof design and movement in action provide a natural cleaning mechanism. However, abnormal hoof shape, improper trimming, insufficient exercise, chronic lameness, poor diet and poor circulation can all disrupt the natural cleaning mechanism and allow infection to set in. We think that any one of the factors mentioned can cause it even with a clean stall and well trimmed foot.
If Thrush is allowed to get bad and invade live tissue lameness may result
Treat it- Good clean shavings, We have found that persons who do extra stall cleaning and add extra bedding have better luck keeping thrush under wraps. Get a wire brush and clean the frog real well take the hoof pick and get as deep in any part of the hoof and frog that you can. We like to use Thrush Buster (purple stuff) and or some other essential oils (clove, tee tre).
Remember a regular hoof care schedule helps.
